Why Are You More Sore Two Days After a Workout? DOMS Explained

You crush a workout.

The next morning?

Not too bad.

Then day two hits—and suddenly sitting down feels like a competitive sport.

If you've trained hard before, you've probably experienced it.

There's a name for it:

Delayed-Onset Muscle Soreness, or DOMS.

And the reason soreness can peak long after your workout is more interesting than most people realize.

What exactly is DOMS?

DOMS is the soreness and stiffness that can develop after unfamiliar or demanding exercise.

It typically begins hours after training and can become especially noticeable around 24–72 hours afterward.

That's very different from the burning sensation you might feel during a hard set.

That immediate burn is temporary.

DOMS develops later.

And despite an old gym myth, it isn't simply "lactic acid stuck in your muscles."

So what actually causes it?

DOMS is strongly associated with exercise that places unfamiliar mechanical stress on muscle tissue.

Eccentric contractions are particularly famous for producing it.

That's the portion of a movement where a muscle lengthens while producing force.

Think:

Lowering yourself during a pull-up.

Lowering the weight during a curl.

Walking downhill.

Controlling the descent of a squat.

Those movements can place substantial mechanical stress on muscle fibers.

After sufficiently demanding or unfamiliar exercise, microscopic changes occur within muscle tissue and the surrounding structures.

That sets off a much larger biological response.

The soreness is delayed for a reason

Your body doesn't instantly produce the full soreness response when the workout ends.

Exercise-induced muscle damage can trigger a sequence of events involving inflammatory signaling, fluid movement, immune activity, and changes in how sensitive the affected tissue becomes.

Those processes develop over time.

That's one reason you can walk out of the gym feeling great...

…and wake up considerably more sore the following day.

The pain you're experiencing isn't necessarily a direct measurement of how much muscle was "torn."

It's part of a complicated response to unfamiliar or demanding exercise.

Does being sore mean you had a good workout?

This is one of the biggest misconceptions in training.

Soreness is not a scorecard.

A workout can stimulate adaptation without leaving you barely able to move the next morning.

DOMS tends to be particularly noticeable when you introduce a new exercise, dramatically increase training volume, return after time away, or perform movements with a large eccentric component.

Then something interesting happens.

Your body adapts.

The repeated-bout effect

Perform the same type of exercise again later and you'll often experience less soreness and muscle damage than you did the first time.

Researchers call this the repeated-bout effect.

One exposure to unfamiliar eccentric exercise can provide a protective adaptation against muscle damage from similar exercise in the future.

That's why a new leg workout can destroy you the first week...

…and feel dramatically more manageable several weeks later.

You didn't necessarily stop training effectively.

Your body got better at handling the stress.

That's adaptation in action.

Can you eliminate DOMS?

Probably not completely—and you don't need to.

Researchers have studied numerous recovery strategies, including massage, compression, cold-water immersion, active recovery, stretching, nutrition, sleep, and supplementation.

Some approaches can influence soreness or certain recovery markers under specific conditions.

But there's no universal switch that makes DOMS disappear.

Even stretching—the classic advice for soreness—hasn't shown strong evidence for meaningfully preventing DOMS when performed before or after exercise.

The basics still matter.

Gradually progress training.

Eat appropriately.

Stay hydrated.

Sleep.

Allow heavily trained muscle groups time to recover.

And recognize that soreness after introducing a new stimulus isn't automatically a problem.

What about magnesium?

Magnesium gets discussed frequently in the recovery world for a reason.

It's an essential mineral involved in normal muscle function, nerve signaling, electrolyte balance, and energy metabolism.

Researchers have also investigated magnesium supplementation in relation to exercise recovery and muscle soreness.

A 2024 systematic review examining magnesium supplementation and exercise-induced muscle soreness found reductions in soreness across the included studies, with researchers reporting potential benefits for recovery.

That's interesting research—and part of the larger reason magnesium has become so closely associated with active lifestyles.

It doesn't mean a topical magnesium spray has been proven to eliminate DOMS.

But it does explain why magnesium itself deserves a place in the recovery conversation.

Recovery is bigger than soreness

The goal after every workout shouldn't be:

"How do I make sure I feel absolutely nothing tomorrow?"

Training is supposed to challenge the body.

Recovery is about giving it the environment to respond.

Sleep.

Nutrition.

Rest.

Movement.
