You've probably seen aloe vera hundreds of times.
It's in skincare products, after-sun formulas, moisturizers, gels, and cosmetics around the world.
That familiarity can make aloe seem almost boring.
The research behind it isn't.
What's actually inside aloe?
Aloe vera is a succulent that stores a clear, water-rich gel inside its leaves.
That inner material contains a complex mixture of naturally occurring compounds, including polysaccharides.
One of the best-known is acemannan.
Researchers have spent decades investigating aloe and compounds derived from it, particularly in relation to skin.
And some of the human research goes considerably further than simply showing that aloe is a popular moisturizer.
Aloe and skin moisture
One of aloe's most obvious characteristics is its enormous water content.
But researchers have also studied specific compounds derived from aloe for their relationship with skin hydration and barrier function.
In randomized, placebo-controlled human research, oral supplementation with aloe-derived sterols has been associated with improvements in measurements including skin moisture and transepidermal water loss.
Another randomized controlled trial involving 122 healthy participants found reduced transepidermal water loss and an increased collagen score after 12 weeks in the aloe sterol group compared with placebo.
That's part of what makes aloe more interesting than simply calling it a "soothing botanical."
Aloe and collagen research
This is where the research gets even more interesting.
Collagen is one of the major structural proteins in skin, and its decline is closely associated with visible skin aging.
Researchers have investigated whether compounds from aloe can influence markers related to collagen.
In one 12-week randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial involving healthy women, oral aloe sterol supplementation was associated with improvements in skin moisture, elasticity, and collagen measurements.
Ultrasound measurements indicated increased dermal collagen content in the aloe sterol group.
Researchers have also observed aloe-related effects involving collagen production in experimental research.
What about wrinkles and skin aging?
Aloe has even been directly investigated in human skin-aging research.
In one study, women over 45 consumed aloe vera gel for 90 days.
Researchers reported significant improvements in facial wrinkles in both dosage groups.
Skin elasticity also improved in the lower-dose group.
When researchers examined biological markers in the skin, they observed increased type I procollagen staining and changes involving MMP-1—an enzyme involved in collagen breakdown.
That's considerably more interesting than "aloe feels nice on skin."
It's one reason aloe continues to attract attention in skin research.
An important detail about the research
Here's where understanding the experiment matters.
Those human anti-aging studies investigated oral aloe vera or aloe-derived sterols.
They weren't studies of Just Relent, and they weren't evidence that spraying our aloe-containing formula onto your skin will reproduce those results.
But that doesn't make the research irrelevant.
It tells us something genuinely interesting about the plant, the compounds researchers have isolated from it, and why aloe continues to be studied.
That's exactly the kind of ingredient we like.
Why pair aloe with magnesium?
Magnesium chloride gives Just Relent its unmistakable mineral foundation.
But we're making a product that goes directly onto skin.

Aloe adds a skin-focused botanical component to the blend and sits alongside seaweed and dandelion—two other botanicals with interesting chemistry of their own.
