Almost everyone recognizes lavender.
The smell alone is enough.
But underneath that familiar aroma is a complex essential oil containing dozens of naturally occurring compounds—and some of them have been studied extensively.
What's actually inside lavender oil?
Lavender essential oil is produced from aromatic lavender plants, with Lavandula angustifolia among the best-known species.
Two compounds are particularly important to its chemistry:
Linalool and linalyl acetate.
Their concentrations vary depending on species, growing conditions, processing, and the resulting oil, but together they contribute heavily to lavender's characteristic aromatic profile.
They're also a major reason lavender has attracted so much scientific attention.
Lavender and relaxation research
Lavender has been investigated in human studies involving relaxation, anxiety, stress, and sleep.
Researchers have studied lavender in several different forms—including inhalation, aromatherapy, and standardized oral lavender preparations.
Systematic reviews of lavender research have reported promising findings in some of these areas, particularly around anxiety, although study methods and forms of lavender vary considerably.
That's important.
Smelling lavender essential oil isn't the same experiment as taking a standardized lavender preparation.
But the amount of research surrounding the plant helps explain why its association with relaxation goes considerably further than tradition alone.
Why does scent matter?
Smell has a direct relationship with the brain.
Odor molecules activate receptors in the nose, beginning neural signals that ultimately interact with brain regions involved in perception, emotion, and memory.
That's why scent can become so closely tied to experiences.
A gym.
Fresh-cut grass.
A certain cologne.
Or the smell associated with the end of your training routine.
We wanted scent to be part of the Just Relent experience rather than an afterthought.
The research behind linalool
Linalool—the major aromatic compound associated with lavender—has itself been extensively investigated.
Experimental research has explored its neurological, aromatic, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties.
Not every laboratory finding translates into an effect from smelling or applying a finished cosmetic product.
But the research illustrates something important:
Lavender isn't chemically simple.
Its familiar smell comes from biologically interesting compounds that scientists continue to investigate.
Why it's in Just Relent
Lavender plays two roles we care about.
There's the chemistry behind the plant.
And there's the experience.
