Magnesium Chloride: The Mineral at the Center of the Ritual

Magnesium Chloride: The Mineral at the Center of the Ritual

Magnesium gets mentioned constantly in fitness and recovery.

But behind the marketing is something much more interesting: magnesium is an essential mineral involved in hundreds of processes that keep the human body functioning.

And for people who train, some of those processes are especially relevant.

More than just a mineral

Magnesium acts as a cofactor in more than 300 enzyme systems throughout the body.

Those systems are involved in everything from protein synthesis and blood glucose regulation to nerve function and energy production.

Around 50–60% of the magnesium in the human body is stored in bone, while most of the remainder is found in soft tissues.

But what really caught our attention was magnesium's relationship with muscle and energy.

Magnesium and muscle function

Muscle movement depends on an incredibly coordinated system of electrical signals and mineral movement.

Magnesium plays a role in the transport of calcium and potassium across cell membranes—processes involved in nerve impulses and normal muscle contraction.

In other words, magnesium isn't associated with muscle simply because supplement companies decided to market it that way.

It's actually involved in the biology of how muscles function.

That's a big reason it sits at the center of Just Relent.

Magnesium and energy

Every rep, sprint, jump, and step requires energy.

At the cellular level, magnesium participates in pathways involved in producing and using that energy.

It's required for processes including glycolysis and oxidative phosphorylation and is closely connected to ATP—the molecule cells use as their primary energy currency.

So magnesium's relevance to an active lifestyle goes beyond the muscle itself.

It's connected to the machinery supplying that muscle with energy.

What does the recovery research say?

This is where things get especially interesting.

Researchers have investigated magnesium supplementation in physically active people for its potential relationship with soreness, performance, and recovery.

A 2024 systematic review examined studies specifically looking at magnesium supplementation and post-exercise muscle soreness.

Across the studies that met the researchers' criteria, magnesium supplementation was associated with reduced muscle soreness, while the researchers also reported findings involving improved recovery and performance.

One controlled study included in this area of research found significantly lower reported muscle soreness 24, 36, and 48 hours after exercise following magnesium supplementation. Participants also reported improved perceived recovery.

That doesn't mean more magnesium automatically equals better performance. Research has also found that additional supplementation may provide little performance benefit in athletes who already have adequate magnesium status.

And that's an important part of understanding magnesium: it isn't magic.

It's biology.

Why athletes care about magnesium

Exercise can alter magnesium balance, and magnesium is lost through pathways including sweat and urine.

Combine that with magnesium's established roles in muscle contraction, nerve signaling and energy metabolism, and it's easy to understand why researchers continue studying the mineral in active populations.

The interesting part isn't that magnesium has suddenly become a "recovery ingredient."

It's that an essential mineral involved in normal muscle and energy function has naturally become part of the recovery conversation.

Why magnesium chloride?

Magnesium exists in numerous forms.

Just Relent uses magnesium chloride, a highly water-soluble magnesium salt that works naturally within a water-based topical formula.

It also gives us something supplements don't: a physical post-training ritual.

Spray.

Rub.

Let it sit.

It's something you can work directly into the moments after training.

Why it's in Just Relent

Magnesium chloride is the foundation of our formula.

But we didn't want magnesium to be the entire formula.

We built around it with aloe vera, seaweed extract, dandelion extract, and an aromatic blend of lavender, marjoram, and cypress essential oils.

Each has its own chemistry.

Each has its own reason for being there.

And magnesium is what brings the entire formula back to where Just Relent started:

Recovery for people who keep going.

RECOVER. RECHARGE. REPEAT.
